[Also in Division H1] In a method of stirring and degassing a melt by means of induced thermal convection currents an electron or ion beam bombarding the surface of the melt is varied in intensity and/or the beam spot is circulated over the surface, at a frequency of less than one cycle per second. In the latter case the beam may be uniformly circled over the melt or the beam held stationary eccentrically of the crucible axis and the crucible rotated.
