940,795. Tunnel furnaces. SERUSPIM. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 20, 1959], No. 1910/60. Heading F4B. A tunnel furnace for firing articles made of coal-bearing shale comprises a preheating zone Z1, a reaction zone Z2a, Z2b in which the carbonaceous material is burnt, a second preheating zone in which the articles are raised to firing temperature, a firing zone and a cooling zone. A fan A blows air into the preheating end of the tunnel, flue d extracts gases from the preheating zone Z1 and from the initial reaction zone Z2a through ports b, and fan C supplies air through ports a. Fan G supplies air to reaction zone Z2b and flue e extracts gases from this zone through further ports b. A curtain of gas introduced by a pair of fans E separates the two sections of the reaction zones. Ports a and b are provided with controlling valves.
