Abstract

The invention comprises substituted or unsubstituted b -cyclopropane acrylic acids or derivatives thereof of general formula <FORM:0940140/C2/1> where R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, are H, -COOR, (R is H or an alkyl group), -CN, or -COR; R3 is H or an alkyl group; and R4 is a -CN or -COOR group, and their preparation by reacting a 4,5-dihalogen hexenoic-2-acid, or a functional derivative with an acidic compound of formula <FORM:0940140/C2/2> wherein R1 and R2 impart acidic properties and may be -COOR, -COR, or -CN (where R is an alkyl group) e.g. malonic acid ester. The reactions are preferably carried out in an organic anhydrous solvent e.g. alcohol, benzene, tetrahydrofuran and chloroform, and the basic condensation agent may be sodium ethylate or silver oxide. Tricarboxylic acids which may be obtained, may be further saponified and decarboxylated to the dicarboxylic acids. Examples describe the preparation of b -(2,2,-dicarbethoxy-3-methyl cyclopropyl)-a -methyl acrylic acid ethyl ester, acrylic acid methyl ester, ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile; b -(2, 2-dicarboxy-3-methyl-cyclopropyl) a -methyl acrylic and/or acrylic acids; b -(2-carboxy-3-methyl cyclopropyl) a -methyl acrylic acid; b -(2-carboxy-2-carbethoxy-3-methyl cyclopropyl) acrylic acid; b -(2,2-diacetyl-3-methyl-cyclopropyl) acrylic acid methyl ester; b -(2-acetyl-2-carbethoxy-3-methyl cyclopropyl) acrylic acid ethyl ester; and b -(2,2-dinitrile-3-methyl cyclopropyl) acrylic acid methyl ester.
