Abstract

939,077. Lubricators. LOXHAMS ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. July 13, 1962 [July 18, 1961], No. 25936/61. Class 12 (3). In a lubrication system, a quill for forcing lubricant into a cylinder of an engine at intervals, has an outlet-valve biased to the open position by pressure in the engine cylinder and a check-valve located at the entrance to the quill. Working pressure is built up between the valves and, when this pressure is increased during the feed-phase of an oil-pump cycle, both valves open and a volume of oil passes through the outlet-valve while an equivalent volume of oil is received through the check-valve. In an embodiment, a quill 4 is mounted in walls 1, 2 of an engine cylinder, a water-space 3 is defined between said walls and seals 7, 9 are provided. The quill 4 is bored at 10 to receive a cartridge 11, which is retained by a nut 12 and is connected at one end thereof to a supply conduit 13. The cartridge is bored at 16 to receive a valve-housing 17, having a valve-outlet 18 therein. A valve-needle 19, having a conicalshaped head 19b and a portion 19a of increased diameter, is mounted in the housing 17. The needle 19 is urged by a spring 20 so that its head 19b engages a seating on the housing 17. The movement of the valve 19 is limited by an interchangeable pad 22 which is abutted by a seal 23. In use, gas from the engine cylinder tends to open the valve-outlet 18 and pressurized oil is supplied from the conduit 13, along axial and radial bores 24-26 in the cartridge 11, through ports 27, 28 in the cartridge 11 and housing 17, respectively and into an annular space between the needle 19 and the wall of the housing 17, so as to urge against the stepped portion of the needle 19. When the pressure in the annular space is sufficient, the valve 18 opens, conduits 29, 30 being provided in the cartridge 11 to permit movement of air behind the needle. In a modification, the needle 19 abuts a hollow end 31a of a control-rod 31, the other end of which is urged by a spring 32, the amount of compression of which is adjustable by a nut 33. The movement of the needle 19 is limited by a ported-plug 34, which abuts a shoulder 31b on the rod 31. In use, oil enters a conduit 35, flows past a check-valve 36, along an axial-groove 37 to radial-ports 38 in a cartridge 39 and into the annular space between the needle 19 and the wall of the housing. Specification 939,078 is referred to.
