Abstract

937,774. Rolling. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. March 20, 1961 [March 30, 1960], No. 10144/61. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for holding down a moving strip and guiding its edges, particularly for use in a cold rolling mill, comprises upper and lower guide assemblies each having longitudinal supporting slats and edge guides, the slats and edge guides being laterally movable to accommodate differing strip widths. Upper and lower guide assemblies 102 and 28 are mounted on a framework 14 which can slide on guide 8 attached to a support 2 for rolls 4 and back-up rolls 6. The lower assembly 28 comprises slots 58-64 connected by a lazy tongs mechanism 68 such that rotation of a motor 98 moves the slots towards or away from each other by way of drive screws 94. The upper guide assembly 102 is similarly constructed but has no edge guides 67 and is supported by parallel links 108, 114 on the frame 14 such that its vertical position can be altered using air meters 104. Inflatable tubes 52T when inflated clamp the slats in any given position. The guide width may be altered electrically by push-button operated motors 98, 98<SP>1</SP> which drive the lazy tong mechanism, the air pressure in the inflatable tube first being released.
