Abstract

936,957. Mixing liquids in flow. R. S. GARWOOD, and E. DEWEY. July 12, 1961 [July 13, 1960], No. 24435/60. Class 86. Apparatus for adding a small proportion of detergent to a flow of water comprises a transparent tube 12 closed at one end by a plug 13 threaded at 13a for attachment to a hose. The other end of the tube 12 is closed by a body member 10 carrying a flexible plastic envelope 16 for the additive, the outlet passage 18 of the envelope being closable by a pin 23 forming the end of a plunger 20. An external sleeve 27 is connected to the plunger 20 by a pin 28 moving in a helical slot 29 in the body 10, whereby rotation of the sleeve will move the plunger 20 axially and open the valve 23. An outlet ball check valve 31 is kept open by a pin 35 when a union 33 is attached to the apparatus; the union has a jet outlet nozzle and is also threaded for an adapter 34 for a brush or other appliance. In operation, water flows through the passages 14, past the rubber flap inlet check valve 15 and through passages 24, which create a pressure drop whereby detergent is expelled from the envelope 16; the mixture being discharged through passages 26, 25. In a modification, see Fig. 2 (not shown), the flexible envelope 16 is replaced by a cylinder 40 and free piston 42. Specification 936,956 is referred to.
