In a process for electroslag welding a solid steel wire of the following composition is used as the electrode: .C.0.1% max .Mn.2% max., preferably 1-1.5% .Si.0.5-1.2%, preferably 0.65-0.85 .S.0.04% max .P.0.04% max .Fe.the remainder The molten slag is formed by melting a prefused flux powder of the following composition: .SiO2.35.5-39.5% .Al2O3.14-16% .FeO.1.5% max .TiO2+ZrO2.4.0% max .CaO+BaO.21-24% .CaF2.4.5-8.25% .MnO.6.25-8.25% .MgO.10-12.5% .Na2O+K2O.0.5% max .S.0.04% max
