Abstract

Molten metal, such as steel, cast iron, ferroalloy e.g. Fe-Cr or Fe-Si, or non-ferrous metal, is electrolytically refined by holding the molten metal body beneath a non-turbulent layer of slag consisting of one or more halides, oxides and/or silicates of one or more alkali or alkaline earth metals (including Mg), Fe or Al, and establishing an arc, e.g. with a D.C. voltage of 30-300 v., in the space between the slag layer and an anode above but not in contact with the slag layer. For deoxidizing and desulphurizing 13% Cr stainless steel or cast iron, a molten slag consisting of CaO, SiO2, MgO, Al2O3 and FeO may be used; for refining copper, a molten slag consisting of CaO, NaCl and CaF2 may be used.
