A web 14 of heat sealable material is fed between cylinders 4, 5 of a tube former by rollers 7 which heat seal the ends 17A of the web; rotary heat sealing elements 11 on shafts 10 form transverse seals in the tube and springs 9 forming continuations of the elements 11, grip the tube to prevent loose articles 18 delivered through cylinder 4 from feed mechanism 1, 2, 3 from breaking the seal before it has set. Spreaders 6 on cylinder 4 and a finger 8 flatten the tube before it is engaged by elements 11. Knives which may be carried by elements 11 separate the filled packets.
