683,135. Packaging-machines. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and BENNETT, W. D. Oct. 16, 1950 [Oct, 28, 1949], No. 27687/49. Class 94(i) A packaging-machine for forming packages of the type consisting of pairs of strips of heat sealing material which are bonded together to enclose a plurality of articles spaced apart, in separate pockets, along the length of the package, includes a peripherally recessed roller to which one of the strips is fed to be formed, by suction applied to the recesses in the roller, with pockets to receive the articles to be packaged. A strip of packaging material 10 is fed to a roller 12 with peripheral recesses 13 and is deformed into said recesses 13 to form pockets by a co-operating pegged roller 14, the strip being held in said recesses 13 by suction applied through the bases thereof and by suction applied to the edges of the strip through holes 23 in the periphery of the roller 12 on either side of the recesses 13. Feed means 15 deposit an article in a pocket so formed, a sealing strip 16 is fed thereover and the strips 10, 16 are sealed together under heat and pressure by a co-operating pocketed roller 19, the suction being then cut off. The suction is applied to the recesses 13 and holes 23 by transverse bores 24 in the roller communicating with a fixed arcuate suction chamber 25 closely adjacent the side face of the roller and extending a suitable distance therearound. Suction may be applied in a similar manner to both rollers of a packaging machine including two co-operating recessed packing and sealing rollers. Specification 511,549 is referred to.
