A packaging machine for enclosing a predetermined quantity of a commodity to be packaged in a pocket defined by two strips of material adhered face to face about the periphery of the pocket, comprises a roll having a peripheral portion for supporting and feeding a strip of porous packaging material, which roll is rotatable from a supply station at which a quantity of the commodity to be wrapped is placed upon the surface of the porous layer to a sealing station at which a second layer of packaging material is engaged upon the porous layer and adhered thereto to enclose the commodity, recesses spaced about the periphery of the roll, means for applying suction to the base of the recesses at the supply stations to draw the porous layer into substantial conformity with a recess thereat and, by suction, through the porous layer, to maintain the commodity in the recess during its passage from the supply station to the sealing station. A strip 11 of a porous wrapping material is fed over a peripherally recessed roll 6 rotated about a hollow horizontal shaft 7 and co-operating with an adjacent similarly recessed roll 9 and a superjacent rotary feeder 4. Suction applied to the base of the recesses 8 in the roll 6, from the hollow shaft 7 and through radial ducts 14, draws the strip 11 into a recess 8 below the feeder 4 and holds the powder fed thereto until the recess co-operates with a corresponding recess in the roll 9, where a strip 12 of non-porous wrapping material, fed over the roll 9, is sealed over and around the powder on the strip 11, with or without the use of heat. The so-formed chain package then passes around the roll 9 to the nip between it and a roll 23 where a third, non-porous, cover strip 22 is sealed on to the strip 11, and the individual packages severed by knives 26 on the roll 23. One edge of the strip 22 may extend beyond the corresponding edges of the strips 11, 12 to provide a flap 28, Fig. 5. In a modification, Fig. 6, a package chain 38 is formed from two porous strips 29, 30 and two outer cover strips 35, 36 of non-porous material sealed on to the chain of porous packets by recessed rolls 33, 34, individual packets being severed by a knife 41 or by cooperating blades and slots on the rolls 33, 34.
