Abstract

989,350. Packaging. PROCTER & GAMBLE Ltd. Sept. 28, 1961 [Sept. 28, 1960], No. 34983/61. Heading B8C. A process of forming packets of particulate material comprises deforming a first film strip so as to form a pocket therein, forming a small puncture through the wall of the pocket, placing the material in the pocket, placing a second film strip over the first film strip so that the material in the pocket is enclosed between the two film strips, sealing the film strips together to form a packet, and withdrawing air from the packet through the puncture. A web 7 of heated thermoplastic film, e.g. a water soluble polyvinyl alcoholic film, is fed on to a drum 1 and drawn into recesses 11 by suction applied to ports 8, 9, 10. A hole is then made in the base of the pocket, either by a rotating spider 13 which has spikes 12 which are pushed through the film above each of the ports 9 or by spikes (Fig. 3, not shown) one of which extends upwardly through the centre of each of the ports 9. The pockets are then filled, e.g. with detergent, and a second web led over and heat sealed to close the pockets, excess air enclosed in the pack being withdrawn through the hole. The drum 1 has the recesses 11 mounted in pairs side by side so that two rows of pockets are formed in the web 7.
