Abstract

A liquid dispensing apparatus comprises a cylinder 10 connected to a liquid supply source via passages 17 and to an outlet pipe 11, a free piston 12 movable in the cylinder, and plug valve 13 mounted in supporting members 14 at each end of the cylinder, each plug valve and its supporting member being provided with coacting abutments 18, 19, the abutment 19 being fixed and the abutment 18 being movable on engagement therewith by the piston at the end of its stroke, the arrangement being such that the two abutments are so disposed relative to each other as to prevent movement of the valves sufficient to effect reversal of the piston until the latter reaches the end of the stroke and displaces the movable abutment relative to the fixed abutment. The movable abutment is in the form of a pin 18 and the fixed abutment is formed by a plate 19 secured to the end supporting member 14. In operation, pressurized liquid, such as beer, is fed through passages 17, valve 13 and into the cylinder 10 where it forces the piston 12 to the right as shown in Fig. 1, thereby dispensing the beer on the other side of the piston through the outlet pipe 11. The piston is prevented from being reversed until it has completed its stroke by means of the pin being in alignment with the abutment plate 19; when the piston has completed its stroke, it depresses the pin against the action of the spring so that the head of the pin passes into a recess formed in the plate, thereby permitting the plug valve to be rotated by the handle 15; a similar action takes place when the piston is moved to the left. In order to prevent the plug valve, if the handle 15 is removed, from being forced out of the end supporting member 14 due to the reaction of the spring-loaded pin 18 against the piston, a manually-operable lever 20, Fig. 4, pivoted on the supporting member 4, is arranged to be engaged in a groove 21 formed in the plug valve.
