Abstract

934,172. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Sept. 7, 1959 [June 7, 1958], No. 18290/58. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake of the kind in which a stationary caliper straddles a portion of the periphery of a rotatable disc and friction pads located in the caliper are adapted to be urged into engagement with opposite faces of the disc by hydraulic actuating means carried by the caliper, the torque on a friction pad when the brake is applied is taken solely by means located at or adjacent the forward end of a backing plate for the friction pad. Fig. 1 shows pads 13 of friction material bonded to rigid backing plates 14 which are urged towards the disc by opposed hydraulic piston and cylinder mechanisms 15, 16. The torque on the friction pads is taken by pins 17 screwed through lugs 18 on the limbs of the caliper 10 and located at the forward ends of the backing plates 14. When the brake is applied the friction pads trail from the pins in a manner similar to a trailing shoe in a shoe-drum brake and this is stated to prevent brake squeal. Removal of pins 17 enables the pads and backing plates to be removed in a substantially circumferential direction. A further embodiment is shown in Fig. 6 wherein spaced parallel pins 26 detachably mounted in the caliper pass through clearance holes 27 in the backing plates 25 so that in whatever direction the disc is rotating the torque will be taken wholly by the pins at their forward ends. Removal of the pins 26 enables the pads and backing plates to be removed through an opening in the radially outer side of the caliper. Inclined bars 31 may be provided on the inner faces of the end parts of the caliper to act as scrapers to keep the surface of the disc free from mud in bad weather.
