Abstract

1,061,142. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. July 11, 1963 [July 12, 1962; Aug. 23, 1962; April 20, 1963], Nos. 26792/62, 32382/62. and 15678/63. Addition to 934,172. Heading F2E. In a disc having one pad urged into engagement with the disc by actuation means carried or incorporated in a caliper. Fig. 2, or clamping member, the other pad being urged into engagement with the disc by the reaction on the caliper or clamping means which slides or swings relative to the disc, two outwardly extending lugs 53 are provided at opposite ends of the backing plate 48 of at least the directly actuated pad and engage torque taking guiding surfaces on plates 54 detachably secured to the caliper or clamping member or surfaces on the caliper or clamping member itself. The circumferential component of drag is taken by the radial surface of the plate 54 with which any given point of the disc first comes into alignment in either direction of rotation while the radial component of drag is taken by the surface 56 of the other plate 54. On removal of one of the plates 54 the backing plate 48 can be moved radially inwards to disengage it from the other torque plate 54 which may be fixed or also detachably screwed to the caliper so that the pad can be removed in a circumferential direction. If the lugs engage the caliper, direct pins passing through the lugs and detachably fixed in the caliper may prevent radial movement of the backing plate. Alternatively plates detachably secured to the caliper and projecting into recesses in the lugs on the backing plate may take the radial component of drag. In another embodiment the torque is taken by a plate detachably secured at one end to the caliper, the other end having a recess which co-operates with a peg fixed to the caliper. In a further embodiment the torque-taking guide plate is provided with resilient fingers which bear on the backing plate and the caliper to prevent rattle. Automatic adjusters may be provided for both the pads, one for the pad applied to the disc by the caliper reaction comprises a nut (95), Fig. 8 (not shown), having ratchet teeth (96) in screw-threaded engagement with a non-rotatable stem (91) of a pad backing member (90). A pawl (97) carried by a rod (98) moved at right-angles to the axis of the disc and moving with a hand-actuating lever causes the nut (95) to rotate when adjustment is required. In another embodiment of adjuster, Fig. 10 (not shown), the backing plate (49) is engaged by a stem (102), screw-threaded in a hole (103) in the caliper and carrying a ratchetwheel (105), the latter being rotated when adjustment is required by a spring-loaded pawl (106) which is rocked about pivot (108) by a stationary abutment (111) on movement of the caliper.
