[Also in Group XXV] A method of securing a rigid insert in a rigid sheet of material includes the steps of contacting a serrated leading edge of the insert with one face of the material, positioning a die with a non-serrated cutting edge on the other face of the material and applying pressure to the insert so that a piece of material is sheared from the sheet and at least a serrated part of the insert following the leading face is forced into the place of the sheared piece of material. The insert comprises a cylindrical threaded shank 1 and a larger portion 3 which is knurled at 4 and 5 and has a groove 7 linked to the knurl 4 by a chamfer 8. The insert is secured in a sheet of material by the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 which comprises a punch 11 and a die 15 which has a bore 16 'equal in diameter to the circle 21 (Fig. 3) through the mid-points of the knurl teeth 20. A ring 17 projects above the surface of the die and is joined to the bore 16 by a chamfer 18. The insert co-operates with the die to perforate the material 9, and the insert is then forced into the hole until the lower face of the punch contacts the surface 12 of the material. Further pressure is applied and the ring 17 forces material of the sheet 9 into the groove 7. Since the bore of the die is smaller than the major diameter of the knurl 5, the tips of the knurl teeth are peened over as shown at 24 and further secure the insert.
