A method of securing an insert 1 in a thin sheet of material 2 includes the steps of contacting a leading face 8 of the insert with the sheet material, placing the insert and sheet between a pressure applying device 6 and a die 3 so that on pressure being applied, the edge 7 of the leading face 8 of the insert co-operates with the die to shear out a piece of the sheet material and to force the insert into the place thereof, a part of the insert following the leading face being so formed as to key to the walls of the aperture in the sheet material, and simultaneously with the punching operation causing an increase in the thickness 10 of the material by forcing it into a countersunk area 5 surrounding the bore 4 of the die. The method is intended particularly for sheets less than <SP>1</SP>/ 16 , inch thickness. The part of the insert immediately behind the edge may be smooth or may be serrated.
