[Also in Division B5] A method of securing an insert of rigid material having at least one flat surface in a rigid sheet of material consists in contacting the flat surface of a smooth-walled part of the insert with a face of the sheet and using the insert, in conjunction with a die which has a cutting edge of substantially the same contour as the insert, to perforate the sheet, the insert being also formed with a head portion having at least one angle in the cross-section configuration thereof which is normal to the path of travel of the insert into the sheet material, which cross-section is greater than that of the smooth wall part, pressure being applied to the insert until a part of the head portion is forced into the part of the sheet immediately adjacent the aperture formed by the smooth-walled part of the insert. The insert comprises a circular smooth-walled part 1, an undercut 2, an hexagonal head 3 and a threaded bore 5. The apparatus to secure the insert comprises a die 14 and a punch 9 which has six staking teeth 12 and a spring-loaded pilot pin 7. The insert is located on the pin 7, the sheet material is placed on the die and the punch 9 is lowered so that the insert shears out a piece of material. Movement of the punch continues until the teeth 12 indent the sheet material to force it into the undercut 2, and until the head 3 penetrates the sheet. The indents may be across the corners of the hexagon or along the faces of the hexagon. Specification 776,373 is referred to.
