934,158. Perforating; jointing by forging; assembling force fits. BELLING & LEE Ltd. June 22, 1962 [Aug. 24, 1961], No. 30508/61. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A method of securing an insert in sheet material includes the steps of supporting an insert having a peripheral groove, in a die formed with an annular ring proud of the face thereof with the annulus surrounding the groove, placing the sheet material on the exposed face of the insert and applying pressure to the assembly of die, insert and sheet material to force the insert into the sheet material and to cause the ring on the die to positively force an annulus of material into the groove and secure the insert in the sheet material. The insert consists of a head 1 and a leading face 2 with a serrated edge 3 created by knurling a part 4 following the leading edge. A groove 5 is linked to the following part 4 by a chamfer 6. The insert has a threaded bore 7. The insert is placed in a die 9 which has a flat-topped ring 10 projecting above the top face 11 of the die. A sheet of steel 14 is laid on the insert and is acted on by a punch 15, which has a bore 16 equal to the mean diameter of the leading face of the insert, to shear a disc 19 from the sheet. Previously sheared discs 19<SP>1</SP> and 19<SP>11</SP> pass up through the punch and are ejected. Towards the end of the punch stroke the ring 10 engages the sheet material and forces an annulus of material into the groove 5. Specification 934,157 are referred to.
