Abstract

745,380. Riveted joints; punches. VICTAULIC CO., Ltd., and BENNETT, K. J. May 17, 1954 [Feb. 18, 1953], No. 4569/53. Class 83 (4). A method of securing together two or more layers of sheet metal is characterized in that the layers are superimposed and a hole is pireced through the superimposed layers so that the displaced metal of the layers projects from the margins of the hole on one face of the assembly and this displaced metal is bent over outwardly and pressed against that face of the assembly to clamp the layers together. A tool for carrying out the method comprises a fixed jaw member 1 integral with a hand lever 2 and a sliding jaw 3 whose shank 4 and supporting stem 5 are slidable on the fixed jaw. A second hand lever 6 has a perpendicularly projecting arm 7 pivoted to the lever 2 and shank 4. The two levers are biased apart by a spring 8. Secured in a recess in the jaw is a plunger 9 having a wedge-shaped cutting edge which co-operates with a die on the fixed jaw 1 formed by an enlargement on the upper end of the bore of a tubular spring- loaded sleeve 10 slidable on a post 11. Longitudinally slidable in a groove in the shank 4 is a member 14 which has a projection 15 at its lower end and an arm at its upper end carrying a stripping plate 17. In operation two or more layers 18 placed on the die platform 12 are pierced by the plunger 9 and the displaced metal tabs are curled under by the plunger as shown in Fig. 2. When the enlarged end 19 of the plunger engages the uppermost metal layer the sleeve 10 is forced down and the curled tabs are clamped to the under surface of the layers by pressure between the end of the post 11 and the enlarged end 19 of the plunger. On releasing the pressure of the hand levers the plunger 9 is lifted out of the die and a leaf spring 23 lifts the member 14 with the sliding jaw 3 until the projection 15 engages the jaw 1 whereupon the joined layers are stripped from the plunger. In an embodiment a metal label 20 is bent around a bolt 21 on a pipe coupling and secured as shown in Fig. 3.
