UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN HENRICSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PUNCH ASSEMBLY.
Application led December 8, 1927. Serial No. 238,510.
'lhe present invention pertains to a novel split ring or collar 13 which is also received punch assembly and relates more particulal'- in a seat 14 formed in theinner Wall' and ly to a stripper for preventing the punch at the lower end of the bushing.f The punch from adhering to the Work while the punch is held from slipping axially by means of a 5 is being with raWn from the Work. nut 15 threaded on the lower end of the 6o llt is Well knovvn that a punch, after bushing and formed with an internal shoulhaving been driven through the work, has der 16 Which abuts the ring or collar 13. considerable frictional adhesion to the Wall rlhe stripping mechanism includes a casof the aperture thus formed. Consequently, ing or barrel 17 spacedly surrounding the 1o when the tool is Withdrawn, there is a tenpunch 8 and having its upper end threadency for the vvorlr to be carried with it. ed on the nut 15. Prior to making this "lhe stripper comprised in the present ineonnection'hovvever, a stripper member 18 vention overcomes this difficulty by holding is dropped into the barrel from the upthe vvorlr hrinly on the table or bed of the per end thereof. The stripper slidably surit machine so that the punch may be readily rounds the working end 19 of the punch vand u extracted. is formed at its upper end with an outward rlhe invention further involves simplied flange 20 adapted to be stopped by an inmeans for retaining the shank of the punch ward Harige 21 on the lower end of the casin the carrying member. 'lhese will be reing. i strong compressed spring 22 is inab ferred to more specically as the descripserted in the casing, surrounding the punch, 7E tion proceeds. l in a manner to abut the ange 20 and the rlihe invention is fully disclosed by vvay of nut lavvhen the casing is screwed on the nut. enample in the following description and Figures 1 and 2 also show the bed or table in the accompanying drawing, in Which- 22 of a machine into which is inserted an 2li Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the apertured die 24: adapted to receive the S0 assembly, showing the tool in elevation; and punch. rlhe Work 25 is laid upon the die lTig. 2 is a similar section showing also and is pierced by the punch when the head 1 the bushing 4and spring in elevation and the is brought down. punch retracted., When the ram 1\ is brought down for the il@ Reference to these views will novv be made purpose of driving the punch through the t5 by use of like characters which are employed vvorlr and into the die, the stripper 18 will to designate corresponding parts throughremain in contact With the Work While the out. casing ll' approaches the work, thereby com- 'lfhe ram or head 1 for carrying the tool pressing the spring 22 as shown in Figure 1.. sa is attached to a movable base member 2 of When the tool is lifted, the stripper will reoo the machine by means of bolts 3 extending main in contact With the work under the from one into the other. The ram is formed action of the spring 22, thereby preventing with a bore t having. an upper end 5 of the Worlr from being lifted by the punch larger diameter, and into this bore is fitted until the punch is completely Withdrawn, as fio a bushing G having an enlarged end l reshown in Figure 2. llhis occurs when the a5 ceived snugly in enlarged end 5 of the bore. flange 21 comes into engagement with the rlhis assembly as Well as other assemblies to flange 20 and thereby lifts the stripper from be described is made before the parts land the Work. 2 are bolted together.` v Although a speciiic embodiment of the int A punch 8 is fitted into the bushing and vention has been illustrated and described, it 100 is held against turning relatively thereto by Vwill be understood that Various alterations means of a slot 9 cut inb its upper end for in the details of construction may be made the purpose of receiving one end of a pin Without departing from the scope of the in- 10 which is passed through the Walls of the vention as indicated by the appended claims. bushing. ln like manner the bushing is held What I claim is Y 105 Aagainst turning Within the ram 1 by having' 1. A punch assembly comprising a carrythe outer end of the pin received in a notch ing member, a bushing l locked therein, a 11 cut in the head 1 in communication with punch inserted in said bushing and having the enlarged'part 5 of the bore 4. The shank a collar receivable in the bushing, a nut of the punch has a groove 12 receiving a threaded on said bushing and retaining saidllo collar, a casing' threaded on said nut and surrounding said puneh, a stripper slidably mounted in the casing and 'surrounding the working` end of the punch, and a spring in said casing and bearing on said stripper.
2. A punch assembly comprising a carryingl member, a bushing locked therein, a punch inserted in said bushing and having a peripheral groove and a split ring mounted therein, said ring being reccii'able in the bushing, a nut threaded on said bushing and retaining said ring, a casing threaded on said nutl and surrounding said punch, a stripper slidably mounted in the casing and surrounding the working end of the punch,
and a spring said stripper.
3. A punch assembly comprising a carrying member, a bushing locked therein, a punch inserted in said bushing and having a collar receivable in the bushing', a nut threaded on. said bushing and retaining said collar, a casing' threaded ou said nut and surrounding said punch, a stripper slidably mounted in the casinpy and surrounding the working end of the punch, and a spring;r in said easing and bearing against said nut and stripper.
In testimony whereof I affix mv signature.
