Abstract
994,891. Stud and socket fastenings. J. & S. ENGINEERS Ltd. Jan. 11, 1963 [Jan. 5, 1962], No. 494/62. Heading E2B. [Also in Division B3] A method of inserting an insert into an imperforate sheet comprises the steps of locating the insert between a punch and the sheet, the sheet lying between the punch and an aligned die aperture and moving the punch and die together so that a leading end of the insert co-operates with the die to shear a piece from the sheet, a resiliently deformable portion of the insert being displaced during insertion to allow the insert to lodge in the sheet in place of the piece sheared from the sheet, the deformable portion recovering to cause an abutment surface on the deformable portion to contact that side of the sheet adjacent the die. In the arrangement according to Figs. 1 and 3, the insert is flat and comprises a bridge portion 2 from which extend two limbs 3 for insertion through a panel 1, and a pair of arms 4 serving as terminal posts. The insert is inserted in the panel by means of a punch and die and is releasable from the panel by an ejector tool 15. The limbs 3 may be shaped differently at their terminal ends, Figs. 4a-4f (not shown). In another arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the insert is of circular section and is formed with four radial slots defining four limbs, the insert being used to secure together a pair of apertured metal sheets. A threaded central bore may be provided for a threaded stud to prevent inadvertent release of the insert. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a peripheral groove is provided which passes through the root of each slot. In another arrangement, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the insert is of rectangular cross-section. In the arrangements according to Figs. 10 and 13, in which the inserts serve as electrical printed circuit tags, a limb 46 is struck from a lower limb 45 and co-operates with surface of a panel and an abutment portion 42 or 53 to releasably hold the insert in an aperture in the panel.
