Abstract
933,822. Viewing equipment for reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 24, 1960 [Dee. 18, 1959], No. 43012/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Groups XIII and XL (b)] An instrument such as a television camera is cooled by means of the evaporation of a liquid contained in a hollow-walled porous member surrounding the instrument which vaporizes at a temperature approaching the maximum operating temperature of the instrument. The television camera 1, mounted in a high temperature region of a nuclear reactor, is enclosed within a non-porous container 2 the lower end of which constitutes a double glazed window 3. An annular hollow walled porous member 4 divides the interior of the container into a camera containing region 5 and an outer region 6. The coolant liquid, which enters the space 8 via the annular passageway 11, diffuses inwardly and outwardly through the porous member 4 towards regions 5 and 6. The gas is withdrawn via annular conduits 13 and 14 in order to be condensed in a heatexchanger and recirculated. The pressure in the camera is less than that of the reactor so that any leakage does not contaminate the reactor coolant gas.
