Abstract

939,714. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 18, 1962 [Oct. 17, 1961], No. 37159/61. Class 39 (4). A method of detecting leaking fuel elements in an operating nuclear reactor cooled by carbon dioxide under pressure and containing fuel elements each enclosed in a protective sheath containing a gas inert to the fuel members and reactor components, comprises sampling the coolant gas before and after it enters the fuel channels, amplifying the inert gas concentration in the samples with respect to the coolant, and comparing, by means of a mass spectrometer, the inert gas concentration of the samples. The inert gas is preferably helium 4, but may be helium 3, neon or krypton, and about 1.5 cm.<SP>3</SP> of helium 4 per fuel element is sufficient for detecting leaks. Before the samples are taken, the coolant pressure may be reduced abruptly, e.g. by about half an atmosphere, or the temperature of the fuel elements may be reduced by varying the speed of the blowers used to circulate the coolant. Amplification of the helium may be effected by absorbing the carbon dioxide into an absorbent such as soda-lime and by absorbing impurities in liquid-nitrogen-cooled charcoal.
