Abstract

Spent fuel elements (2) are first stored in a water-filled decay tank (4) until the rate of decay has decreased sufficiently, then the fuel elements (2) are transferred to a drying device (5). After drying, the fuel elements (2) are enclosed in gas-tight containers (3) and then stored in a shielded dry storage apparatus (7) until they are reprocessed or otherwise disposed of. The dry storage apparatus (7) comprises a shield (71), defining a chamber in which there is a support (35) for the fuel elements (2). The chamber is closed by a cover (73). A coolant flows through cooling tubes (72) provided in the shield (71). <IMAGE>
