An aircraft altimeter has three pointers 5, 3, 4 driven at different relative speeds over a dial 1 in response to altitude changes, the pointer 5 being defined as an aperture in a disc 2 otherwise masking that part of the dial 1 which is traversed by the aperture 5, and the dial part having at least one area R of a different colour from the rest of the dial and so arranged as to be exposed through the aperture 5 whenever the latter points to a graduation corresponding to a selected altitude. As shown, the pointers 5, 3, 4 indicate ten-thousands, thousands and hundreds of feet respectively; the dial 1 is black with the areas R, R1 coloured orange-red and the area G green with a black line Gb; the disc 2 has a further indicating aperture 13 and other apertures to preserve rotational balance. The coloured areas R, G, R1 may be carried by a disc rotatable relative to the dial to enable the selected altitude to be adjusted.
