[Class 97 (ii)] The invention relates to direct reading tacheometers of the kind described in Specification 236,111, [Class 97 (ii)], in which the altitude circle is divided according to multiples (e.g. by 100) of the tangents of angles of elevation to form a scale whose image is projected into the field of view of the telescope so as to be visible with the image of the vertical staff. According to the invention the tangent scale is provided with intermediate graduations between the tangent graduations whose numerical values satisfy one or other of the equations where r signifies a cardinal number and k the round whole number, e.g. 100, 50, 20, 10 or 5 which it is desired to use as a multiplying factor when converting the scale readings into measurement of height between the staff and the observing point. Various sections, or the same section, of the tangent scale may be provided with intermediate graduations corresponding to more than one value of k. Measurements of height are made by reading off directly staff intercepts against adjacent intermediate scale graduations of the chosen multiplication.
