Abstract
645,366. Radiolocation. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Oct. 15, 1947, No. 27667. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (vii)] In a frequency modulated radio altimeter the need for range changing by the pilot is eliminated by modulating the frequency over two or more ranges in succession cyclically and switching the beat frequency signals (representative of height) to respective indicating means for each of said ranges. This may be performed by a rotating condenser having two diametrically opposed sets of rotor vanes of different areas with a ganged commutator for switching the beat frequency signals to the respective indicators. Masks may be operated by a relay to cover the unwanted display at any given altitude. To reduce the complexity of the display and the space required on the instrument panel the indicators may be concentrically pivoted pointers readable against respective concentric scales on a common dial, the unwanted indication being obscured by a mask arranged as in the Figure (not shown).
