Abstract

931,504. Tools for holding spring rings. ANDERTON SPRINGS Ltd. Nov. 30, 1961 [Sept. 7, 1960], No. 23764/60. Class 61. An hydraulically or pneumatically operable tool comprises a pair of pivoted jaws 1, 2 each having a stud 7, 8 for insertion in an aperture or recess of a retaining ring, the jaws being adapted to be moved by a common thrust rod 14 operated by a piston and cylinder assembly 6. The thrust rod is connected by a toggle linkage 11, 12, to the jaws so that when the rod is moved by the assembly, the jaws are forced apart. A stop consisting of one or more knurled nuts 22 screwed on to the thrust rod, limits opening movement of the jaws. Fluid pressure is fed through a flexible pipe to a pistol grip type handle, operation of the fluid pressure supply being afforded by a trigger. In a modification operation is afforded by a foot pedal. In a modification of the tool for use with internal type retaining rings, the arrangement is such that the studs are forced closer together when the retaining ring is to be assembled or removed.
