563,735. Vices. PALLANT, W. C., BOOTH, J., and DORRAS, J. April 23, 1943, No. 6538. [Class 61 (ii)] A bench vice with screw adjustable jaw has an adjustable loading clutch interposed between the adjustment screw and the movable jaw so that the driving connection becomes ineffective at a predetermined pressure and in addition the movable jaw system has a rapid adjustment and release. In the example shown, the pressure of the adjustment screw 8 is transmitted to the movable jaw 3 through a fluidpressure cylinder 16 and piston 17, the latter in driving connection at 22, 23 with the fore part 24 of the toothed clutch, the other part 27 of which is in driving connection with the end 34 of the adjustment screw 8 working in a nut 10 fixed in the rear end of the rack adjustment housing 5. The cylinder 16 constitutes the fore part of a sleeve 10a slidable-in the bore of the housing 5 and the loading of the clutch spring 28 is adjustable by a screw 38 working within the main screw 8. The pressure of the vice is instantly released and the vice made ready for rapid adjustment by tilting the rear part of the housing 5 about its ball connection 13 with the movable jaw 3 so as to disengage the housing teeth from the teeth 7 on the base 1 against the pressure of springs 9.
