Abstract

930,114. Flame-resistant boats. P. NASH, and R. H. BIGMORE. Sept. 11, 1961 [Sept. 10, 1960; Nov. 4, 1960], Nos. 31258/60 and 37927/60. Class 113. A flame-resistant craft, e.g. a ship's lifeboat, having personnel accommodation space totally covered by a canopy adapted to be sealed to the structure of the craft in such a way as to substantially prevent the ingress of ambient atmosphere into the space, has means for continuously flooding with cooling liquid both the canopy and the entire skin of the body or hull, at least above the water line of the latter. In one embodiment the boat has a canopy of flexible waterproof material supported by a ridge pole 6 and columns 9 which also serve as conduits to supply water to the sprinklers 7, carried by the pole 6, and provided to flood the outer surface of the canopy and the hull. The water is drawn by a pump 8 from below the water surface through an intake 11 and passed to the members 6 and 9 as well as sparge pipes 10, at the bow and stern, which flood the outer surfaces of those parts of the vessel. The canopy 5 is secured to the boat by e.g., quick release catches. The canopy may be of rigid sheet material, e.g. steel, aluminium resin-bonded glass fibre, which may be lined with heat insulating material and which has sealable access openings. The canopy and hull may be formed with inner and outer skins defining water jackets through which water may be pumped to be released through vents where often it floods the outer surface of the boat.
