Abstract

929,319. Automatic circuit-breakers. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Sept. 28, 1961 [Oct. 15, 1960], No. 34819/61. Class 38 (5). In an air-blast circuit-breaker having a high pressure air-filled contact chamber and a blast valve operable to allow air flow from the chamber past the contacts, the moving contact is connected to a piston-rod extending through the blast valve and carrying a piston which with a second piston coupled to the blast valve limits a space to which compressed air can be admitted to operate the circuit-breaker. As shown, the blast valve 20 is connected to a piston 22 biased to the valve closed position by a spring 24 in the space 28 above the piston. The nozzle moving contact 13 is biased to the closed position by a spring 27 and is connected by a rod 38a, 38b to a piston 25 in a cylinder 26 arranged so that compressed air supplied through a pipe 30 to a space 33 acts on the lower surface of the piston 22 and the upper surface of the piston 25 to open both the blast valve 20 and the contacts 13, 14. Compressed air from the chamber 10 flows out through the contact nozzle 18, passage 19 and valve 20 to an exhaust outlet 21 and also acts on the contact 13 to increase its opening speed. A passage 29 connects the space 28 to the cylinder 26 which is vented to the atmosphere at 31, 32, but after a shock-absorbing pad 35 on the moving contact 13 engages the open valve 20 the piston 25 passes the end of the passage 29 so that during subsequent movement compressed air is supplied to the space 28 to assist in reclosing the blast valve and avoid slowing down the moving contact. During the final part of a closing operation air exhausting from the chamber 28 through the passage 29 assists the contact movement. The rod 38a, 38b has a passage 40 and cylinder 39 co-operating with a fixed piston 41 so as to receive compressed air from the passage 19 during closing movement and assist the spring 27 in closing the contacts. A solid rod may replace the rod 38a, 38b and the fixed piston 41 may be omitted (Fig. 1, not shown).
