Abstract
929,316. Apparatus for utilizing solar heat. A. KANTOROWITZ, and M. KANTOROWITZ. Oct. 17, 1961 [Nov. 29, 1960], No. 40944/60. Class 64 (2). Heat from the sun is concentrated by a lens I on to a heat absorbing unit II and a circulating fluid thereby heated in the unit flows to a boiler unit III which may have a burner for use in adverse weather conditions. The circulating fluid may comprise a gas circulating between the heat-absorbing unit II and the boiler unit III in which water is vaporized by the hot gas (Fig. 8, not shown). Alternatively the circulating fluid may comprise water which remains liquid under the prevailing pressure in the unit II, but can be withdrawn from the unit III as steam for a power unit such as a steam engine IV driving a rotary machine such as a fan V. The lens I may be fixed in which case it extends through 180 degrees, or it may (as shown) subtend a smaller angle and be movable in accordance with the relative motions of the sun and the earth. Movement may be effected by a clock motor by means of tapped-off steam in dependence upon the output from the heater unit. In a preferred form of heat-absorbing unit II a coil carrying the heat transfer fluid extends through a double walled semi-cylindrical shell, the outer wall of the shell being made of glass and the coil being painted with an absorbent paint. Fig. 8 shows one form of boiler unit III in which water in a chamber 18 is heated under pressure. A valve 12 releases the pressurized water which flows as steam to the power unit. The coil 17 receives its heat from the solar heat absorbing unit II which alternatively may communicate directly with the water space 18, the coil 17 then being omitted. A combustion unit 16 and flue tubes 15 are provided for use under adverse weather conditions.
