Apparatus for generating power and supplying a variable load comprises a vapour condensation cycle plant at least one tank HL for the storage of a heat transfer liquid, means RVi 1 RVi<SP>1</SP> for heating this liquid by heat exchange with vapour drawn off from the vapour condensation cycle plant and an absorption cycle power generation plant connected to the tank to employ the heat transfer liquid as a source of heat and comprising at least one degasifier D for the aqueous gas solution a gas turbine Ta Ta<SP>1</SP> Ta<SP>11</SP> and an absorber A, A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>11</SP> for reception of weakened solution coming from the degasifier D and for enrichment of the weakened solution by absorption of exhaust gas from the turbine as shown expansion of at least part of the gas, which may be ammonia, is performed in several stages in consecutive turbine units with resuperheating of gas between stages. Liquid heated by vapour from the condensation (steam) cycle and cooled liquid employed to supply the absorption cycle may be divided into two superposed horizontal layers situated in the same tank HL.
