Abstract
928,602. Contacting liquids with gases. CARRIER CORPORATION. June 17, 1960 [June 24, 1959], No. 21467/60. Class 55 (2). A gas-and-liquid-contact apparatus includes a casing 3 having an inlet, e.g. louvres 4, and an outlet intermediate which is a packing 9 in the casing 3 to which liquid, e.g. water, is supplied from a distributer 11, means, e.g. a fan 15, for inducing a gas, e.g. air, stream through the packing 9 in heat-exchange relation with liquid flowing through it to be discharged through the outlet, the packing 9 comprising combustible sheets 20, 21 forming substantially verticallyextending parallel cells 19 having openings at both ends to permit the gas stream and liquid to pass therethrough in counterflow, and a fire retardant covering the upper end portion 25 of each cell. The retardant may be a coating of fire-resistant paint extending downward from the upper edges 25 of the cells a distance up to less than two inches and may be intumescent and composed of Parts by weight Monoammonium phosphate - - 56 Dicyandiamide - - - - 10 Pentaerythritol - - - - 21.2 Sodium alginate - - - - 0.3 Titanium dioxide - - - 12 Water - - - - - 50 Latex binder - - - - 35.4. The water collects in a sump 5 whence it is supplied to the motor 12 by means of a pump 13 through a line 14.
