Abstract
Beryllium, which may be of commercial purity containing up to 4% of impurities, is chemically polished by means of a solution containing in percentage by volume: .Orthophosphoric acid (S.G. 1.75).65-80 .Nitric acid (S.G. 1.42).0- 5 .Water.15-30 Treatment may be carried out at a temperature between 80 DEG C and the boiling point of the solution for about 30 seconds. In an exemplified process polishing is carried out in two distinct stages, a 10% sulphuric acid etch for 5 seconds at 70-80 DEG C. being interposed. After polishing the surfaces may be passivated by immersion for 15 seconds in a mixture of equal parts by volume of water and nitric acid (S.G. 1.42).
