Abstract

928,089. Cigarettes. J. NOEL-DAVIES. Jan. 29, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1959], No. 4554/59. Class 130. A cigarette 10, Fig. 1, including a hollow mouthpiece 11 with or without a filter 16, is provided with adjustable means 13 surrounding the burning portion to control the supply of air to the burning zone. In Fig. 1 the control means 13 comprises a slidable cardboard sleeve covered with metallic foil and having a widened conical end, with apertures 13a, which leaves an adjustable air gap 14 around the burning zone. The end of the cigarette may be protected, before use, by a cap 15 and a friction band 17 facilitates adjustment of the sleeve 13. In a modification, Fig. 4, the end of the member 13 is crimped or fluted longitudinally to provide air passages 14a. In Fig. 5 the cigarette 20 is surrounded by a rectangular cross-section tube 21 with apertures 21a controlled by flaps 21b attached to a slidable collar 23. Additional uncontrolled apertures 21c may be provided. In a further embodiment the cigarette is surrounded by a pair of relatively rotatable sleeves with cooperating apertures.
