Abstract

1,265,966. Cigarettes; tobacco-smoke filters. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO., Ltd. 12 Sept., 1969 [27 Nov., 1968], No. 56325/68. Heading A2C. A ball valve member 13 lightly loaded by a spring 9 causes a puff of smoke drawn through a cigarette etc. to be divided into a first portion that passes through an annular passage or ring of passages 8 to a part 17 of a filter plug 3, and a subsequent portion which, after retraction of the ball 13, passes through an annular passage 12 to a part 18 of the filter plug which is less dense or has lower smoke retaining properties than the part 17. The passages 8, 12 are formed in a metal or plastics member 2 secured by adhesive bands 7, 15 between the tobacco section 1 and the filter plug, and the latter comprises conventional fibrous or sheet tobacco smoke filtering material, the inner part 18 being separated from the outer part 17 by a paper sleeve 17'. In a modification, the part 18 is of shorter length and bounded also at the outer end of the filter plug by the material of the part 17.
