[Also in Division B4] A method of forming a paper cigarette wrapper so that it has a controlled permeability to air comprises subjecting parts of the paper to an action which modifies its porosity without producing openings in the paper which are visible to the naked eye and such that the wrapper has, or as it is consumed provides, a progressive increase in air intake area over at least the inner or stub end of its length. A cigarette smokable from either end may have both ends suitably formed. As shown, a part of the wrapper 1 is treated to provide a cellulose ester strip 3 increasing in width towards the stub end and which decomposes on heating and so during smoking destroys the treated paper in advance of the burning tip to provide an increasing air inlet. The strip 3 can increase in width only from about the wrapper midlength, or can extend only along the cigarette butt end. In another embodiment, some five hundred holes of about one thousandth of an inch diameter are formed in the wrapper by sparks (see Division B4) before, during or after cigarette manufacture. Alternatively, the paper porosity may be modified by ultrasonic vibration, electrophoresis, mechanical rolling or grinding, or the rapid evaporation therefrom of liquid air or solid carbon dioxide. In a further embodiment, an over-porous paper, or an over-porous window in a cigarette, is sprayed with kaolin or magnesium trisilicate except where porosity is required. The Provisional Specification refers to air intake into cigars and cigarette holders, to the combination of filter and other cigarette wrapper air intakes with cigarette tips allowing longitudinal air passage therethrough, and to the use of adjustable masking sleeves for air inlets according to the invention.
