Abstract

927,913. Airmen's harness &c. SVENSKA AEROPLAN A.B. Aug. 14, 1959 [Aug. 30, 1958], No. 27819/59. Class 141. [Also in Group XXXIII] Cables are attached to parts of an airman's body and to the member controlling an ejectable escape device so that the body parts are pulled into their safest positions when the escape device is operated. Cables 8 extend upwardly from hoops 5 clamped around the wearer's calves and through rings 9 fixed at hip level to junctions 10 with the free ends of cables 11 which extend from similar hoops 6 on the arms, through rings 12 at the front of the waist, and through rings 9. A further cable 13 extends upwardly from each junction 10 and over a pulley 14 on a support-plate 20 to a point 15 where the two cables 13 meet. From the point 15 a central cable 16 extends down the wearer's back and terminates in a fitting 17 for connection to the aircraft. A cable 22 fixed at its ends 23 to the helmet is passed through an eye 21 on the plate 20. In the free position, Fig. 1, the wearer can move freely, but when a downward force is applied to the fitting 17 the cables tighten so as to bend the arms and legs and hold the head erect, Fig. 3. In the free position, the cables 8, 11 and the lower part of cables 13 are retained in open-topped channels on the outside of the clothing, Fig. 7 (not shown), but tightening of the cables releases then from the channels. The upper part of cables 13 and the cable 16 are housed in tubular channels in the clothing. The rings 9, 12 and plate 20 are attached to a harness, Fig. 5 (not shown). In modified cable arrangements, each pair of guide rings 9, 12 may be replaced by a single guide, or the ring may be higher, the cables 11 not being passed through the rings 9. Alternatively, separate cables may extend from each limb to the fitting 17.
