959,707. Airmen's seat harnesses. J. MARTIN. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 11, 1961], No. 36534/61. Heading A3V. An airman's seat harness comprises a pair of lap straps anchored to the aircraft seat and a pair of holding down straps extending upwardly between the airman's legs from laterally spaced apart locations on the seat base, each lap strap being associated with an individual holding-down strap to constitute a strap-pair, one member of which extends through an eye at the free end of the other member, its free end fastened by a quick release box, one member of the strap pair having lengthadjusting means. The seat harness includes chest straps 3, 4 anchored to the seat back, their free ends fastened by quick-release box 11 lap straps 5, 6 extending from anchorages 7 at the sides of seat-pan 8 about the airman's thighs and terminating with ring fittings 12, 13 and holding-down straps 9, 10 constituted by a single length of webbing passing through spaced apart inverted loops 14, 15, on the front of the seat 2, the ends extending through ring fittings 12, 13 and being fastened by a second quick-release box 16. Quick-release boxes 11 and 16 are mounted on breast plate 17 and are automatically actuated during ejection of seat 2 by a time delay mechanism 18 operating via cables 19 and 20. Chest straps 3, 4 and lap straps 5, 6 have automatic tensioning devices effective during ejection comprising a snubbing device 22 and cord 23 anchored by a weak link to the aircraft structure so that the straps are pulled through devices 22 which prevent slacking when the weak link is broken. Straps 5, 6 have adjusting buckle 21. The arrangement may be combined with a parachute harness. Other embodiments in which the lap straps are attached to the quick-release box and the holding-down straps are adjustable with end ring fittings are referred to.
