[Also in Division B7] A safety harness for use with an aircraft ejection seat comprises adjustable straps 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 anchored at one end either to "snubbing boxes" 16 or brackets 9 on the seat, and at the other end to quick-release boxes 11, 13 operated manually or automatically through cables 26, 27. Lines attached to the straps at the snubbing boxes are connected at their other ends to the aeroplane by means of couplings which break when the seat is ejected. The "snubbing boxes" normally permit free movement of the strap in either direction but when the seat is ejected, they tension the strap by inertia-operated, spring, or ballistic devices, so as to shorten its length and secure the occupant in his seat. The quick release boxes are mounted on a padded breast plate 28, and they may be operated during the seat ejection by a time delay mechanism as described in Specification 711,234.
