Labels 32, Fig. 1, are extracted from a magazine 38 by pads 34 on an intermittently rotated transfer member 16, the pads receiving gum from a roller 36, and an intermittently rotated carrier 14 provided with gripper units 17 receives the labels from the transfer member 16 and presents them to articles 11 carried on an intermittently movable conveyer 12. Each gripper unit is formed with a pair of laterally spaced ribs 41, Fig. 3, against which the labels 32 are nipped by cam-operated pivoted grippers 18 which are spring-urged into gripping position. As the gripper unit presents the label to the article 11, cam-operated rollers 42 on a bracket 43 pass between the ribs 41 to press the label into engagement with the article and move downwardly to roll the label on to the adjacent face of the article. The bracket 43 extends from a slide bar 44 mounted in a horizontal slideway 46 which itself is mounted on a vertical slidebar 49, movement of the bracket 43 being effected by the cam and link mechanism shown in Fig. 1. The presentation of the label to the article leaves a portion extending upwardly beyond the upper edge of the article and at a subsequent station, a further roller 67, Fig. 2 (not shown), rolls the portion of the label on the upper face of the article.
