Class 73 Relates to a labelling machine in which a continuously rotating delivery drum 5, Fig. 1, brings gummed labels into the path of bottles 3 fed on a conveyer 2, the bottles being caused to roll so as to take the labels and apply them around the bottles. According to the invention the drum 5 carries a plurality of suction pickers 11, Figs. 1, 2, pivoted about horizontal axes 13, each picker having arranged above it a label magazine 23 also carried by the drum 5. The pivoting movement of each picker 11 is controlled, during rotation of the drum, by a fixed annular cam track 18 so as to swing it from the outwardly facing position shown in the left-hand side of Fig. 2 to a vertical position in which its suction face is immediately below the associated magazine 23 (see right-hand side of Fig. 2) and vice-versa. Each magazine 23 is carried by parallelogram linkage 26 and is capable of vertical movement under the control of a further annular cam track 29, the arrangement being such that each magazine moves downwardly under its own weight to bring the lowermost label 24 into contact with the suction face of the associated picker 11 in its vertical position. The magazine then moves upwardly to permit the picker with the extracted label to swing outwardly, in which position the label is gummed by a gumming device 6, Fig. 1, and is then applied to a bottle. Each magazine has a roller 28 running on the cam track 29 and a roller 17 running on the cam track 18 is carried by a spring-urged push rod 19 acting on a pivoted toothed segment 16 meshing with a toothed wheel 14 on each picker 11. Safety devices, including a solenoid-operated locking element 36, are provided to prevent the picker 11 from being swung outwards when there is no bottle present on the conveyer at the labelling station and also when a label has not been taken from the magazine.
