Abstract

Alkyl bromides are prepared by contacting a terminally unsaturated olefine having 4-12 carbon atoms with a molar excess of gaseous hydrogen bromide in the presence of a free-radical initiator and in the presence of not more than 5% by weight of elemental bromine based on the hydrogen bromide. Specified initiators are oxygen, ozonised air, ozonised oxygen, a peroxide or ultra-violet light. The reactants may be passed into the pre-formed alkyl bromide, which may be dissolved in a non-polar solvent. Specifications 841,745, 843,234 and 867,549 are referred to.
