Abstract
The invention comprises peroxides of general formulae: <FORM:0964988/C1/1> <FORM:0964988/C1/2> <FORM:0964988/C1/3> <FORM:0964988/C1/4> <FORM:0964988/C1/5> wherein R and R1 represent the same or different alkyl radicals and R2 represents an alkyl or aralkyl radical, and the preparation of these compounds wherein (a) the compounds I, II and III are obtained by reacting a diketone of general formula: <FORM:0964988/C1/6> wherein R and R1 represent the same or different alkyl groups, with respectively 1, 2 or 3 molar proportions of hydrogen peroxide, (b) the compounds II and III are obtained by reacting a compound I with respectively 1 or 2 molar proportions of hydrogen peroxide, and (c) the compounds IV and V are obtained by reacting a compound I with respectively 1 or 2 molar proportions of an alkyl or aralkyl hydroperoxide R2OOH in the presence of a small quantity of mineral acid. Specified alkyl or aralkyl hydroperoxides for use in the latter preparation are ethyl, tert-butyl and cumene hydroperoxides. Examples describe the preparation of 3,5-dimethyl-3,5-dihydroxy-1,2-dioxolane, 3,5-di-methyl-3-hydroxy-5-hydroperoxy- 1,2-dioxolane and 3,5-dimethyl-3,5-dihydroperoxy- 1,2-dioxo lane by reacting acetylacetone with appropriate amounts of 30% hydrogen peroxide, and the preparation of 3,5-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-5-hydroperoxy-1,2-dioxolane and 3,5-dimethyl-3,5-ditert.-butylperoxy-1,2-dioxolane by heating 3,5-dimethyl-3,5-dihydroxy-1,2-dioxolane with 29% hydrogen peroxide and tert.-butyl hydroperoxide respectively, the latter being reacted in the presence of a little N/10 H2SO4. The novel 1,2-dioxolanes are accelerators for the polymerization of vinyl compounds.
