Abstract

1535038 Curing ethylene polymers UNION CARBIDE CORP 26 Nov 1975 [27 Nov 1974] 48541/75 Heading C3P A scorch resistant vulcanizable composition comprises 100 parts by weight of an ethylene polymer, from 0À1 to 5À0 parts by weight of a first peroxide which has a half-life of from 0À5 to 4À5 minutes at from 160 to 200‹ C. and has the structure wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted C 2 to C 12 -divalent hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are each individually a substituted or unsubstituted C 1 to C 12 -monovalent hydrocarbon radical, and n is 0 or 1; from 0À1 to 2À0 parts by weight of a second peroxide which has a decomposition rate at least from 20 to 100 times slower than that of the first compound and which is either 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-hydroperoxyhexane or a compound having the structure: or wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are as defined above; and from 0À1 to 5À0 parts by weight of at least one organic compound containing at least three allyl groups. Specified allyl compounds are trialkyl cyanurate (TAC), triallyl phosphate (TAP), triallyl phosphite, triallyl orthoformate and tetra-allyloxyethane. Examples are given in which the compositions cured comprise (a) polyethylene, dicumyl peroxide or 2,5-dimethyl- 2,5-di(tert.butylperoxy) hexane or alpha, alpha<SP>1</SP>- bis(tert.butylperoxy diisopropyl)benzene, together with cumene hydroperoxide and TAC; (b) ethylene-ethyl acrylate or vinyl acetate copolymer, dicumyl peroxide, tert.butyl hydroperoxide and TAC; (c) polyethylene or ethyleneethyl acrylate copolymer, alpha, alpha<SP>1</SP>-bis- (tert.butylperoxy diisopropyl)benzene, tert.- butyl hydroperoxide and TAC; (d) ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer, dicumyl peroxide, tert.butyl hydroperoxide and TAC or TAP; and (e) polyethylene, dicumyl peroxide together with tert.butyl hydroperoxide or cumene hydroperoxide, and TAC.
