Abstract

1293429 Cross-linking olefin polymers SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Dec 1970 [28 Dec 1969] 58252/70 Heading C3P Polymers of at least 50 weight per cent of olefins are cross-linked by heating with (1) an organic hydroperoxide and (2) a peroxy silane of formula where each of R 1 to R 4 are C 1-3 alkyl or phenyl. A dialkyl peroxide, di(aralkyl)peroxide, dialkylperoxy alkane, dialkylperoxy alkyne or a perester may also be present; and the compositions may contain fillers, e.g. calcium carbonate, clay, talc, diatomaceous earth and carbon black, and stabilizers, e.g. 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thiobis- (6-t.-butyl-m-cresol), and may be used to insulate electric cables. The polymer may be polyethylene, polybutene, polyisobutylene, polyisoprene, or an ethylene/propylene, ethylene/ vinyl acetate or ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer. Many suitable peroxides are specified and examples describe the cross-linking of (2) polyethylene and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers with di-t.-butylperoxydiphenylsilane together with cumene hydroperoxide, dimethyl di - t. - butylperoxyhexane, dicumyl peroxide and optionally t.-butylperbenzoate, or with t.-butyl hydroperoxide and t.-butyl perbenzoate; and with t.-butylperoxy triethylsilane or cumylperoxy trimethyl silane together with cumene hydroperoxide, dimethyl di - t. - butylperoxyhexane, dicumyl peroxide and t.-butyl perbenzoate; (3) polyethylene with a di-t.- butylperoxy diphenylsilane, dicumyl peroxide and t.-butyl hydroperoxide or cumene hydroperoxide and dimethyl di-t.-butylperoxyhexane; (4) polyethylene and (5) ethylene/propylene copolymer with cumylperoxy trimethyl silane, cumene hydroperoxide, dimethyl di-t.-butylperoxyhexane, dicumyl peroxide and t.-butyl perbenzoate; and (6) ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer with di-t.-butylperoxy diphenyl silane, cumene hydroperoxide, dimethyl di-t.- butylperoxyhexane and dicumyl peroxide.
