Abstract

Graft polymers are obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride in the presence of (A) a peroxidic or other free radical polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and a substantially linear high molecular weight homopolymer of an olefin of the general formula CH2=CHR wherein R represents an alkyl group or a copolymer of two or more olefins of the general formula CH2= CHR1 wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or alkyl group or (B) in the presence of a hydroperoxide of a homopolymer or copolymer of the type defined above. Polymers specified are polypropylene, polybutene and polyhexene and copolymers of propylene and ethylene. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk, in solution in an organic solvent or in aqueous emulsion or suspension. The reaction product may be treated to remove unreacted olefin polymer and vinyl chloride homopolymer formed during the course of the reaction, the latter showing a softening point of 75 DEG C. which is higher than that of a conventional polyvinyl chloride having the same molecular weight.
