Abstract

1354782 Cross-linking olefin polymers SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 June 1971 [20 June 1970] 28984/71 Heading C3P Olefin polymers are cross-linked by heating in the presence of (1) at least one peroxide selected from diaralkyl mono-peroxide, alkyl aralkyl monoperoxide and diperoxide having at least two alkyl groups, said peroxide having at least one skeletal unit of formula and (2) at least one tertiary peroxyester. The polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer of ethylene, butene-1, isobutylene, propylene or isoprene, or a mixture of such polymers and copolymers. The polymers may be mixed with paraffins, fillers and stabilizers, and may be used to provide electrical insulation for conductors. Many suitable peroxides are specified and examples describe the curing of compositions comprising polyethylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, mixtures thereof, ethylene/propylene copolymers and ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymers, together with stabilizers, e.g. 4,4<SP>1</SP> - thiobis - (6 - t.butyl - m - cresol), phenyl- # - naphthylamine and polymerized 2,2,4- trimethyl - 1,2 - dihydroquinoline; paraffin, dibutyl phthalate, silicone oil, zinc stearate, magnesium silicate, talc, zinc oxide and lead oxide; and peroxide mixtures comprising di - α - cumylperoxide or 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5- di-(t.butylperoxy) hexane and t.butyl perbenzoate or di-t.butyl adipate.
